The Origins of the 5.11 Name
The “5.11” name comes from the Yosemite Decimal System, a grading scale used to measure the difficulty of rock climbs.
At the time the brand was founded, a 5.11 climb was considered extremely difficult and close to the limits of what most climbers could achieve. Today, climbing grades extend much higher, but during the early years of the brand, successfully completing a 5.11 climb was seen as a serious accomplishment requiring skill, toughness, and determination.
The original 5.11 pants were designed by legendary climber Royal Robbins, one of the pioneers of American rock climbing. These climbing pants became known for their durability, flexibility, and practical design features.
How 5.11 Tactical Became a Tactical Brand
While the pants were originally designed for climbing, they quickly gained popularity outside the climbing community.
Law enforcement and FBI training personnel began using the pants because of their durability, comfort, and functional pocket layout. Their popularity within tactical and law enforcement circles rapidly grew, eventually leading to the launch of the modern 5.11 Tactical brand we know today.
